Track Etiquette

Published Mon 11 Aug 2025

With our membership steadily rising, and three groups sharing facilities on a Monday night, it's timely to provide a reminder of etiquette when using the track. We ask that parents of under 12s make their children aware of these rules, and ensure that they act accordingly.

Track hours:

We share the oval with the Carina Cricket Club and Balmoral Little Athletics. We have exclusive use of the track from 6pm to 7:30pm on Monday and Thursday. Outside of these times, we must be mindful of other users of the oval.

Please refrain from using the back straight when warming up before 6pm if the cricketers are training there. (Instead, run "horseshoes" using the bends and home straight).

Lane Use:

On Mondays, the distance group will generally use the inside four lanes and the sprint group will use the outside four lanes. Please refrain from using lanes not assigned to your group. Runners not participating in the training sessions (e.g. walking or doing their own laps) and runners with dogs should run inside or outside the marked lanes, so as to not interfere with the training groups.

If possible, avoid crossing the track while training sessions are in progress, but if doing so, make sure to be aware of other runners and look both ways!

Lane Etiquette:

For distance runners in particular, stick to the inside most lane when running laps, and refrain from running more than two abreast. Faster runners should overtake on the outside. For example, when running counterclockwise (normal track running direction), stay to the left, in lane 1, and overtake in lanes 2, 3, and 4. Do not cross into lane 5 or above, as they might be in use by the sprint group.

Never stop dead on the track, as you might have runners right behind you. Rather, step off the inside of the track before stopping.
